This is amazing! I did a double-take because it was so picture perfect that I thought it was a 3D creation.

I love the subtle reflections and the colors of the rocks on the water, they look as if they were painted. Makes the whole scene looks surreal. :)

Thanks!  It definitely was a gorgeous location.  A storm was passing over and made for some really dramatic skies.

I promised my kids I would take them there some day. They have to see it. I had no idea, I was just stuck in Pleasanton one weekend, and rented a car...boy was I glad I did. I hit it in November, and lucked out, no snow yet...but no tourists!   :D (Big Grin)

Lucky you!  There was tour buses and people everywhere when I visited.  Lots of cell phone "photographers" walking in front of people to take their selfies.

This was 1998, I think. No cellphones then. Yeah, I was very lucky.
Something I'll always carry with me. They say when the first white men saw the Valley,
they broke into tears. I don't blame 'em.

Wonderful colors and light.  Did you get any rain from those wonderful clouds?  Hope your summer's going well.

Thanks!  No rain.  There was talk of some thunder and lightning but I didn't see any.  Summer is going pretty good, but very busy.  I haven't been able to go exploring as much as I would like but I guess there is always fall Shrug.

Wow! what sort of lens do you use to get that edge distortion/angle effect?

Thanks!  I was using a Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 fisheye lens.  The valley is so wide it was difficult to capture the whole scene otherwise.

You're welcome!
That's a cool tip! Wouldn't have thought to use a fisheye for that.
Would love a fisheye, there are too many cool lenses to get!
Do you have any experience with fisheye filters? Not in camera ones but ones you can attach to the end of your lens.

I shoot a lot of landscape with the fisheye because it creates a different look than what most people try.  I haven't experimented much with filters because it doesn't have filter threads due to the bulbous front element.  This is the only way I have found to do it: www.diyphotography.net/add-nd-….

Like you said it sounds like a good way to get a wider landscape into one shot!
Oh I didn't mean putting a filter on the fisheye I meant putting a fisheye filter on a regular lens.
I'm afraid I can't afford a fisheye lens but getting a fisheye filter would be a cheaper alternative.
So I was just wondering if you knew if they were any good. But that's ok :)

I did a little research before choosing to buy a lens over the filter/adapter.  Overall, most opinions stated that the image quality was decreased when adding the filter/adapter to a normal lens.  Granted that is just someone's opinion.  Price wise, I purchase my fisheye (Rokinon 8mm f/3.5) for about $200 when it went on sale.  Sites like www.slickdeals.net post deals pretty frequently for all sorts of camera gear and many other things.  Happy hunting!

Thank you so much for your advice!
I think I will need to look into it a bit more because I was told the filter would cost me AUD$200 and that the lens usually cost AUD$900!
Does Rokinon make fisheye lenses in different sizes as I need one that will fit my Nikon.
I may do some research and then wait for the post Christmas sales and get one then.
I mainly want one for my next big holiday which won't be till the end of next year so I have time :)
Thanks again!

AUD$900 seems a bit excessive.  A Nikon/Canon brand might bring that price, but the Rokinon one I am using has nearly the same quality for a fraction of the price.  Rokinon does make the lens in many mounts (Canon EOS, Nikon, etc).  The "Rokinon" brand is commonly rebranded as Samyang, Bower, ProOptic, etc.  When shopping around this fact could save you a bit of money.

This is a stunning shot. You obviously know Yosemite well. Where exactly was this vantage point if I may ask? I just never have enough time when I'm there, it's always a rushed day trip--I will go back sometime and take some real time to explore the various viewpoints at leisure and at various times of the day.

Thanks!  I actually had never been to Yosemite until that day and I was only in the park for a few hours.  Here is the location on google maps: www.google.com/maps/@37.717309….

I knew I was only going to be in the park for a couple hours and did a bit of research on where I wanted to shoot prior to going.  This website www.colbybrownphotography.com/… has awesome location descriptions and maps for various viewpoints around the park.  Good luck on your next trip!
